Exploring the Ghost Town of Varosha: A Journey Through Time with CyproBus

Our 45-person tour group discovering the haunting beauty of Varosha with CyproBus.

On a sunny summer morning, CyproBus proudly organized a unique tour to the hauntingly beautiful Varosha, the once-glamorous resort town in Famagusta, now frozen in time. With a full-size coach and 45 curious travelers on board, we journeyed through stories, history, and emotion.

Once a playground for celebrities in the 1970s, Varosha was abruptly abandoned in 1974, leaving behind empty streets, half-finished buildings, and an eerie silence. Today, parts of it are open for controlled visits — and we made the most of it.

Our professional guide shared emotional and informative stories about the area's rise and fall, and how it symbolizes the island’s complex history. Guests walked along the iconic beachfront, saw decaying hotels, and marveled at the overgrown boulevards that nature has slowly reclaimed.

Many participants described the experience as "surreal yet unforgettable" — walking through a city where time stopped felt like entering a living museum. Several were moved by the juxtaposition of the clear turquoise sea and the crumbling buildings behind it.

CyproBus remains committed to delivering meaningful and well-organized excursions across Cyprus. Whether you’re a local or a visitor, our goal is to connect you with the island’s hidden stories and memorable destinations.
